Safe Drive Training instructor Mark Butcher is currently in Bangladesh conducting driver training for Grant Geophysical
The Indonesia Defensive Driving Centre have just finished a large project for ICI Paints in Yogykarta (Central Java)
PT. Thiess Indonesia have purchased under licence, a Safety Driving Program (and all materials) from SDT/IDDC. SDT/IDDC conducted a train-the-trainer program in Balikpapan, Kalimantan during July, 2004.
BACKGROUND:
Justification for undertaking driver training in Indonesia:
Learning to drive is easy for most people. Almost anyone can qualify for a drivers license, after a few weeks of training under the guidance of an able Instructor, but learning to drive safely is not easy. Safe driving depends chiefly on Experience.
Driving a motor car is probably the most dangerous activity most people will undertake and we are constantly placing ourselves at risk.
Statistics show that 90% of all crashes are due to HUMAN ERROR.
The Human Errors are the result of drivers behaviours such as:
Speeding, fail to signal, following dangerously, through red light, yelling to another drivers, honking protest, revving engine, shinning bright light to retaliate, insulting gesture, cruising in passing lane, braking suddenly, deliberately cutting off, etc.
The risk of being involved in a collision is always present, no matter how well we have mastered the basics.
Driving is a complicated activity because we need to do many tasks at once.
Most drivers in Indonesia have aggressive driving personalities
The safety knowledge/awareness, self control and sense of social responsibility of most drivers in Indonesia including other road users are very poor
The signs, markings, signals in Indonesia sometimes are not placed or working properly
The unpredictable situations in Indonesia such as : Unrest, Robbery, Demonstration, etc
