Information for High Schools:

SAFE DRIVING is used by more than 1,250 Australian and New Zealand High Schools. SAFE DRIVING is an excellent resource for any teachers conducting Driver Education Programs. Each of the 28 segments are stand alone; allowing teachers to structure a lecture presentation around a relevant segment. Ideally a copy of the video should also be made available for students to access through the school library loans system.

Information for Driving Schools:

Many pro-active driving schools now use this video to complement their learn to drive lessons. The SAFE DRIVING DVD can be played in-car on a DVD screen, as part of the students lessons.

Information for Fleet Managers:

Fleet safety is more than just a one day driver education course. What a company driver can learn in one day is valuable only if there is an environment of safety that develops and regular stimuli to encourage and reward their efforts. SAFE DRIVING is an excellent fleet safety resource that can be used in-house to assist in developing a culture of safety. One of the 28 segments can be played at each regular meeting of staff. Alternatively a copy of the video could be supplied to new employees as part of their driver induction program.

FEEDBACK ON SAFE DRIVING DVD

"I strongly recommend SAFE DRIVING to anyone, but in particular I'd like to see every parent of a learner driver, not to mention the librarians at every Australian High School, buy it as soon as possible. Lives will undoubtedly be saved by them doing so." Ewan Kennedy, AutoGuide, January 2004.

"My name is Bruno Ranalli I have been a driver trainer for 32 years having just acquired a DVD of SAFE DRIVING, can I take this opportunity to say how impressed I am with the content and quality that I have seen. keep up the good work we need to save those young lives."

Pricing: AUD$35.00 (including GST & postage in Australia)

SAFE DRIVING Written Test:

Safe Drive Training has developed a comprehensive written test that covers each segment of the video and a separate marking guide with answers is included. The written test can be re-produced as often as needed by the buyer. AUD$22.00 (including GST & postage in Australia)

The NRMA (National Roads and Motorists Association) a leading road safety organization in Australia have purchased the rights to the SAFE DRIVING DVD and have launched their own version as part of their Safer Drivers Campaign. Safe Driving Handbook - OUT OF PRINT

This "attitude adjustment" handbook aimed to address the misconceptions and attitudes of novice drivers.

It was written by SDT owner (Joel Neilsen) in 1998 and as proof of our commitment to novice driver education we invested over $7,500 to send a free copy to every High School in Australia and New Zealand. Following this many schools purchased bulk packs of the handbook and over 15,000 copies were circulated. In 1998 and 1999 all participants in the Quest Safe Drive 2000: Young Driver Program received a free copy as part of their attendance.

Safe Drive Training developed this revolutionary driver education handbook to address the many driving myths, attitudes and behaviours of novice drivers. The 48 page handbook attempted to openly confront the many aspects of driver behaviour that self repeat daily on Australian roads and too often go unpunished, unchallenged and often unnoticed by the police and transport authorities. These behaviours are known to be symptoms of larger problems with regards to driver safety.

ABOUT THE HANDBOOK

The buzzword in driver education at the moment is "attitude". Whilst I agree a safe driving attitude is far more important than car control skill; many road safety/driver education publications, advertisements and training programs address this attitude deficiency by simply stating that "a driver should demonstrate a safe and responsible attitude". Few attempts have been made to dissect and review the attitudes in question (especially those peculiar to younger drivers)

The handbook was developed to stimulate discussions about driver’s attitudes and what motivates people to drive like they do. Some of the concepts contained required honest self-analysis by the reader. Although readers may not have associated themselves with some of the information it was equally disturbing to realise other drivers that shared the road with you did, if they took the time to think about it.

It is a common human trait to dismiss or switch off to ideas that are confrontational. All I can ask is that for your own benefit read this handbook with an open mind and the resolve to modify your behaviour as necessary.

MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR

This handbook has been written based on my first 10 years of driving experiences. When I was learning to drive I was guilty of displaying many of the bad habits and believing many of the misconceptions outlined in this handbook. This was through no fault of my parents, friends or of driving instructors but I was simply a product of a licencing system that in my opinion continues (even today) to produce drivers with only minimal basic standards. A licencing system which does not address the development of safe driving behaviours and attitudes by novice drivers.

As a fellow driver (for the safety of your loved ones and mine) I implore you to read this handbook and to try and see things from my perspective. This after all is another step in becoming the best driver you can be.

FEEDBACK:

"I thought your handbook excellent for what you designed it for....and I personally would like to keep the handbook" Jenni Thompson, Transport Training Manager, CHOGM 2001

"I recently received the Safe Driving Handbook and was impressed with the content...I will order more copies" Darrell Nash, Pre-driver education, Norlane High School

"This handbook is an excellent publication for the novice driver, while at the same time giving us more experienced drivers a huge wake up call to continually appraise our attitudes and behaviours on the road. Joel and his team should be congratulated for having the initiative to produce such a publication such a publication with the comprehensive coverage it gives to driving attitudes" Frank Bottomley, Campaign Organiser, Stop the 4 O'Clock Knock!
